While genetic testing is receiving attention in the press and trade journals, its promotion by plan sponsors still remains in its infancy. When asked about their current approach to the use of diagnostic tests to identify genetic variations in patients that may impact how effectively a drug works, only 7% of employers said they currently provide coverage for genetic tests, with 11% considering a formal approach to the issue. Large employers were more likely to be considering a formalized approach (p<.05). For those few employers who do cover the tests, 40% cover them under the drug benefit while 53% cover the tests under the medical benefit. A limitation of this question is that many employers may simply not be aware of the current coverage rules under the medical benefit.
